Liquidity
How easily an asset can be bought or sold without moving its price — the lifeblood of any honest, usable market.
Liquidity measures depth: how much you can trade before the price moves against you. A liquid market has many participants and tight spreads; an illiquid one suffers slippage, manipulation, and volatile pricing.
On-chain liquidity
In DeFi, liquidity lives in pools funded by providers who earn fees. In markets generally, liquidity also lives on exchanges — which is why exchange holdings are a core part of W3D’s capital measurement. Thin liquidity lets a few players swing prices.
Why it affects decentralization
When liquidity concentrates in one exchange or one pool of validators’ stakes, a single failure can destabilize the whole market. Distributed liquidity is a quiet but real pillar of a healthy decentralized network.
