Concept: the three tabs that matter
- Risk: who can upgrade, sequence, and freeze — names, thresholds, delays. This tab *is* the audit summary.
- TVL: size of the honeypot. Big TVL + early stage = maximum caution per dollar.
- Activity: real usage vs mercenary farming. Dead chains with big TVL are exit-liquidity museums.
Hands-on lab (free)
- Grade three L2s you know by stage (0/1/2) from memory, then check against L2Beat. Calibrate your instincts.
- For one chain, trace a single risk line (e.g., “upgrade multisig 4/7”) to the actual addresses and signers.
- Write a one-paragraph risk verdict for a chain a friend uses — practice communicating risk plainly.
Safety checklist
- Stage 0 + large deposits = custodian with extra steps. Size accordingly.
- Watch for *downgrades* (projects quietly loosening security) as closely as upgrades.
- L2Beat lags brand-new launches — brand-new + big incentives = maximum skepticism.
