A treasury is a project’s pool of funds — usually its own tokens plus accumulated revenue — used to pay contributors, run marketing, fund grants, and bail out ecosystem programs. In a DAO, the treasury belongs to the token holders and is spent by vote; in a company, it’s the founder’s wallet.

Why it matters

Who controls the treasury decides what the project actually is. A multisig held by a few insiders = a company wearing a DAO costume. A treasury whose spending requires public, on-chain votes is a real test of decentralization. Always ask: “who can move the money, and how?”
