Optimism is the original optimistic rollup (Ethereum L2) and steward of the OP Stack: cheap, EVM-equivalent transactions secured by Ethereum, governed by the Optimism Collective’s bicameral system (Token House + Citizens’ House).
How it works
Transactions execute off-chain, batches post to Ethereum with fraud-proof security, withdrawals finalize after the challenge window. The Collective funds public goods through retroactive grants (RetroPGF) — sequencer revenue recycled into ecosystem building.
Why it matters for decentralization
Optimism’s dual experiment — technical (the Superchain vision of many interoperable OP chains) and political (Citizens muni-voting alongside token holders) — is the most ambitious governance lab in crypto. Score it on both axes: sequencer/upgrade-key centralization today versus the credible path to removing them.
Risks & trade-offs
Centralized sequencer and upgrade keys (Stage 1 rollup); 7-day withdrawal window; governance complexity (two houses, many councils); and Superchain revenue dependence on continued L2 growth.
FAQ
Optimism vs Arbitrum? Sibling designs, different bets: Optimism on the Superchain ecosystem + public-goods governance; Arbitrum on staged decentralization + DAO treasury scale. Compare sequencer setups, not slogans.
What is RetroPGF? Retroactive public-goods funding: the Collective pays contributors *after* proven impact, voted by badgeholders. Novel and genuinely different from grant committees.
Is OP a governance token? Yes — Token House votes on upgrades, funds, and collective direction, with Citizens’ House balancing plutocracy.
