A hardware wallet is a dedicated offline device (Ledger, Trezor, and peers) that generates and stores your private keys in a secure chip, signing transactions without the keys ever touching an internet-connected computer. You verify details on its screen and approve with physical buttons.

Why it matters

It’s the default recommendation for meaningful holdings because it kills entire attack classes at once: clipboard malware, fake wallet apps, and remote hackers all fail against keys that never leave the device. Buy only from the manufacturer, generate the seed on-device, and it becomes the vault your cold storage strategy is built on.
