Data availability is the guarantee that a rollup’s transaction data is actually published somewhere anyone can check — not just a claim that “trust us, it happened.” Without it, nobody can build fraud proofs or reconstruct state, and the rollup’s security collapses to trusting the operator.
Why it matters
“Where’s the data?” separates real rollups (data on Ethereum) from pretenders (data on a committee server). Data-availability layers like Celestia and Ethereum’s blobs exist to make publication cheap — because verification without data is theater.
