The genesis block is a blockchain’s very first block — block #0 (and #1 on Bitcoin, which famously embedded a headline in it). It’s baked into every node’s software, so the whole chain anchors to it.
Why it matters
The genesis block is the root of all hash links, so it can never change or be re ordered. It also reveals launch philosophy — pre-mines, hard-coded allocations, and who got tokens at the start are etched at block 0, which permanently shapes how decentralized a network’s ownership is.
